For those in the industry, the benefits of MWD and directional drilling are readily apparent. In the communities that we operate the value to the citizen isn’t always obvious to the local resident. This article from the Post Independent is a case in point. I am not sure that they see the difference between one well for every ten acres vs. one rig for every ten acres.

North American rig activity increased last week

The Oil & Gas Journal is reporting that overall rig activity increased in both Canada and the USA last week. Horizontal drilling made a slight gain, but directional drilling activity dropped by more than 5%.

Burgan, fabled Kuwait oil field in irreversible decline with high water cut

Production from the world’s second-largest oil field may decline without the help of international oil companies. Kuwait, which produces 2.2 million bbl/day, has failed to renew agreements with several international oil companies including BP and Chevron. The Burgan, second in size only to Ghawar in Saudi Arabia, has an estimated capacity of 1.4-1.5 million bbl/day. It possibly could have been maintained for more than 10 years. Seismic While Drilling

On August 14, the Oil and Gas Journal reported that breakthroughs in seismic while drilling (SWD) are bringing this promising technology closer to commercial viability.

In the OGJ article Seismic-While-Drilling Advance Hailed Nick Snow reports that Technology International Inc and the US Department of Energy are pushing the limits of the SeismicPulser system. In a separate article, Fred Aminzadeh of dGB-USA has also offered his analysis of the current state of SWD, and it’s potential to reduce drilling costs.

Looking back to this January 1993 article, SWD has long promised, but so far failed to deliver. Time will tell if these recent advances can deliver as promised.
