More wells with less rigs

November 6, 2010

For those in the industry, the benefits of MWD and directional drilling are readily apparent.  In the communities that we operate the value to the citizen isn’t always obvious to the local resident.  This article from the Post Independent is a case in point.  I am not sure that they see the difference between one well for every ten acres vs. one rig for every ten acres.

Industry Firsts for Acoustic Telemetry

The XACT system is automated, solid state, and incorporates a full throughbore design. The tool can easily be operated by rig crews without the need for full-time MWD operators on location. The fight between mineral and surface rights in Texas

October 6, 2009

One of the most frequently recited “rules” in oil and gas law is that the mineral estate is dominant to the surface estate. Although courts still give lip service to the rule, the conflicts caused by drilling in urbanized areas appear to be eroding that dominance.

Burgan, fabled Kuwait oil field in irreversible decline with high water cut

October 2, 2009

Production from the world’s second-largest oil field may decline without the help of international oil companies. The Burgan, second in size only to Ghawar in Saudi Arabia, has an estimated capacity of 1.4-1.5 million bbl/day. It possibly could have been maintained for more than 10 years. Seismic While Drilling

September 4, 2009

On August 14, the Oil and Gas Journal reported that breakthroughs in seismic while drilling (SWD) are bringing this promising technology closer to commercial viability.

In the OGJ article Seismic-While-Drilling Advance Hailed Nick Snow reports that Technology International Inc and the US Department of Energy are pushing the limits of the SeismicPulser system.  In a separate article, Fred Aminzadeh of dGB-USA has also offered his analysis of the current state of SWD, and it’s potential to reduce drilling costs.

Looking back to this January 1993 article, SWD has long promised, but so far failed to deliver.  Time will tell if these recent advances can deliver as promised.
